My New Toy

Brinsea Octagon 20

Man, am I lucky. I’m sure by now, you’ve investigated or even heard of the accuracy of the Brinsea incubators, and my desire to purchase one of these puppies.  I’m here to let you know…. it’s gonna change my life.

My old hovabator “forced air” used to be dependable, I could hatch anything with it. After putting it away for a few years I recently brought it out again. To my dismay, I seem to kill the chicks before they hatch. The best I have done is to check the egg fertility with it. The first set of eggs I realized that my thermometer was broken, even though the chicks were developed they never hatched.  I bought a new thermometer and had a great start.  Midway through I  added too much humidity to the incubator. I drowned the chicks in their shells. What a disappointment. I was left feeling like a chick killer.

My parents and I decided that a new incubator would be the perfect solution for my problem. Rather than go with a replacement model, we decided instead to venture into this new, unknown, Brinsea land.  There are a few different brands on the market, but I decided upon the Brinsea because it has a reputation for it’s quality, accuracy, and for it’s excellent customer service. And folks, once I own this beautiful piece of machinery, I  will be  a much more centered, contented, happy, non-chick killing person.

I am fortunate to have a online friend who is selling me her Brinsea Octagon 20  to me.  (she upgraded to a large capacity Brinsea) I will most likely have it paid off by the end of the month and will be able to start incubating eggs in Early April.  I know that I will love this incubator. It  will make my life more successful, will eliminate that annoying dead chick in the shell syndrome, and  will promote world peace. It’s gonna be easy to use, purty to look at, and will  keep me from jumping off chicken pens. Well, that might still happen…… But, I’ll be a happier teen.

Busy With Birds

 Polish Naked Neck Hen
It’s been busy around here lately. My mom and I have spent a ton of time working to make the website better.
I have been re-sorting my birds into pairs and trios so that I can get the best breeding sets possible. We’ve recently culled several of our lesser quality birds to make room for new birds and new hatches. We are trying to pen the birds a little different and they seem happier. They are laying more eggs lately.
My dad finally got the Crimson Dawn Turkey pen finished. They seem much happier now. Did you know that the hens tail fans out like the Tom’s? We couldn’t believe it when we first saw a hen parade around with her colors showing. The hens don’t get as poufy or blue in the face, but it’s very pretty. I’m really enjoying this new flock and can’t wait until they start laying their fertile eggs.
My mom and dad are talking about getting a better incubator. The one I have is very irregular. We are considering the Brinsea R-Com 20 digital incubator or the Brinsea Octagon 20 DX incubator with autoturn cradle. If you have experience with either of these or have a recommendation please go to the guestbook and let me know. We want to get the best for our money.
Selling sets of 6+ eggs on EBay has been a thrill. It’s so much fun to watch people get into a bidding frenzy over my eggs. Hopefully it will continue so we can buy my incubator soon.

One of my goals from a few years ago is finally going to happen. I have a beautiful bantam white crested black polish that I am going to breed with my naked neck white crested black polish. I am hoping to be one of the only breeders of Naked Neck White Crested Black Polish in California. My mom and dad finally found a good enough rooster for my hen at the Stockton show. It will be fun to try breed. My hen has been laying eggs the last couple of days so I want to incubate the eggs and see if my plan works.

If you have a chance please go to my guestbook and say hello.

Lots Of Eggs and a New Arrival

Spencer and Charlie

My first eggs sent by USPS made it safely to their destination. My mom and I were very happy when Naomi let us know they had made it and that she had them in her incubator. She even took pictures of opening the box and I will post those pictures on my site. I sure hope that her eggs hatch well.

My parents are going to the Stockton Poultry show this weekend while I go to winter camp with church. They are going to meet Naomi for the first time and probably Caitlyn too. Maybe they will bring my turkeys home while driving through Fresno. They are also going to pick up a awesome trio of bantam leghorns from Danny Feathers via Lacy Greer.

Last weekend we helped rescue a Barbados Lamb for my friend and agility teacher Gina. We named the lamb Charlie. We bottle feed him every 5 hours right now. He’s kind of like a dog and follows me everywhere he can. He’s really cute. Charlie was only a few hours old when we picked him up because his momma didn’t want anything to do with him. Everytime he would try to nurse she would kick him or head but him. He was so hungry when we first fed him! After a lot of work to teach him how to nurse from a bottle he has turned into a pro.

My Faverollles have started laying 2 eggs a day. I have a few more orders of eggs to send and then I will be able to start putting ads in eggbid and ebay. My other chickens should start laying soon too.

That’s it for now. Thanks for checking in!
